Evening on Eden Street falls
To the too slow turning beat of the world
For a girl
Her kingdom by the sea
High above the waves and shallow clouds
That follow her around the town
Not for you the fairground smiles
The narrow road their promise hides
Where drunken poles carry telegraph wires
Unfurling to the horizon
Matchsticks and motor oil
Staining the shirts and fingernails of the boys
In the harbour
Stones bending spoken wheels
Sisters on bicycles they flock
Like birds to the woollen mill
At the sound of the old siren
House stare through tired blinds at
Child brides at washing lines
Where endless days are sure to rise
The front door yawning empty morning
Leaving now you guide the pain
By walking loudly in the rain
We’re paper bags on different trains
To the horizon seeking asylum
Eastward of Eden Street
The ocean’s rolling breathing in and out regardless
Her kingdom by the sea
High above the waves and shallow clouds that
That followed her around
They followed her round the town
Followed her down to the ground
