My given name is Henry Ryder
I’ve always been a good provider
They say I’m steady and I know my place
I built our shack on the Chinese quarter
Work for me was on the water
Many storms are written on my face
She is young but she is able
Spreading flour upon the table
For the loaves she makes for me by hand
Loading lambs newly slaughtered
Waiting for my only daughter
She’s the fairest flower in this new land
Oh there you go, coloured clouds in the morning sky.
Cables twist and hands get old
One false move in that dark hold
Among the cold young blood and bone I fell
A runner he was sent to warn her
But she’d turned a different corner
Came face to face with the undertaker’s bell.
Oh there you go, coloured clouds in the morning sky
There you go, you kept your beauty in disguise.
And since then she’s rarely spoken
Sees that moment in slow motion
Broken bread scattered on the ground
Spends her time down at the water
Feeding all the sons and daughters
Waiting for the night to drift on down
Birds they fly when their work is done
I hear their wings I the evening sun
Beating seeking safety in the night
But some will fly and not return
In their hearts the love they’ve learned
Carried westward slowly out of sight.
